Visit counts. The site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits. It tells me how many people read each page, which page or website sent them, their country, and their type of device, browser and operating system. It also measures how fast each page loads. It sets no cookie and stores nothing in your browser, and Cloudflare says it does not use your IP address or browser details to identify you in these counts. I see totals, never a single person.
A check for automated traffic. Cloudflare also adds a small script to each page. It checks whether the visit comes from a real browser or from an automated program, and Cloudflare says it saves the result in a cookie called cf_clearance. This is the only cookie the site sets. It is set to expire after one year, and your browser sends it only to this site.
The site’s own JavaScript opens the menu, moves the video row on the Home page, switches the tabs on the Home page, filters the videos page, and starts a video when you press play. None of it records what you do. The two Cloudflare scripts above are the only other scripts on the page. There are no ads.
The host. The site is hosted by Cloudflare. Like every website host, Cloudflare receives the technical details of each request, such as your IP address, your browser and the page you asked for, so it can deliver the page and protect the site from attacks. Your browser may also ask Cloudflare for a page just before you open its link, so that it loads faster. If a page fails to load, your browser may also send Cloudflare an error report.
The fonts. The site’s three typefaces load from Google Fonts. Your browser asks Google’s servers for them, so Google receives your IP address and browser details.
Cloudflare and Google may process this data outside Canada.
A video on this site does not load from YouTube until you press play. Before that, the picture you see is a copy stored on this site, and nothing is sent to YouTube.
When you press play, the video loads from YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode, youtube-nocookie.com. From then on, YouTube’s own privacy policy applies.
Links to YouTube, LinkedIn, Instagram and the sources on each page take you to other websites. Their own privacy policies apply there.
If you write to aman@rethinknormal.ca, I receive your email address and what you write. I use it to reply, and if you report an error, to check it and correct the page.
Each article ends with a line that reads “Found an error on this page? Tell me”, followed by my email address. The link opens a new email in your own email program, with the page’s title and web address already filled in. Nothing is sent until you send it.
There is no mailing list, and I will not add you to one. I do not sell or share your email. If you report an error, the corrections log names you only with your permission.
I keep emails only as long as I need them to reply or to fix a page.
