Rethink Normal

How this site is made

No affiliate links and no sponsors, so nothing here is written to move you toward a product. Every load-bearing fact traces back to a public primary source, listed at the foot of the step page with the date it was checked. And when something turns out to be wrong, it is corrected in public rather than quietly edited.

Two rules decide what gets published.

Education before persuasion
If the explanation does not stand on its own, nothing else about the page matters.
Long-term thinking over quick wins
There is nothing here ranking the best card of the year, because a ranking is out of date the month after it is published.

A page written in 2021 can still carry a 2021 rule, with nothing on it to say the rule has changed.

Rethink: the correction is the product.

When a rule changes, the page changes with it. When a mistake is found, it is corrected in public with a note saying what changed and when. When something can be explained more clearly, it gets rewritten.

A primary source is the body that sets the rule, not an article about it.

Each step page lists its sources at the foot, with the date they were checked, so you can check a claim without taking my word for it. The video catalogue carries none: a video’s sources are on its step page, where it has one. Where a primary source does not exist, the gap is left visible rather than filled with a secondary source dressed up as a primary one. Some of the earlier videos have no citable source behind them at all.

Counts
A regulator, the text of an Act, a credit bureau, or an issuer’s own published schedule of rates and fees.
Does not count
A news story reporting a rule, or another finance site summarizing it.

What is machine-assisted, and what is not

AI tools are used in making this. Here is exactly where, and what stays a person's responsibility.

What a machine helps withWhat a person is answerable for
Finding, organizing and summarizing sources Checking every source against the original before anything is published
Working out how a piece should be structured Deciding whether it is worth publishing at all
Building the production files behind a video The numbers, the claims and the conclusions in them
Drafting, for the video scripts and for this site Every sentence that ships, read and signed off
The narration voice, ElevenLabs, a voice I named Sam The script Sam reads, and the decision to disclose the voice
Some of the illustration, in the videos and here Every diagram carrying a number or a label, drawn by hand

Three things are not generated at all.

Captions
Made by forced alignment against the written script, so the tool is handed the words and asked only for the timings, which means it cannot mis-hear a term or invent one.
Screenshots
Real and never recreated.
Motion
Drawn in code, not made by a video model.

Narration uses an AI voice. The script, research and rankings are written and verified by a real person.

Assistance does not replace accountability. Everything published here is reviewed, directed and decided by a named person.
